Webstore Closing Down

It has been a pleasure dealing with everyone around the world.

Unfortunately interest has declined to practically zero(except for the last minute orders).
I will stop taking orders at the end of September 2003.

I will continue to support all of you who have ordered from me in the past.

Thank you

NEW

What's new for me? I'm now experimenting with Hydrogen Fuel Cells. Check out my website at FuelCellHobbyist.com

Art Applewhite Rockets is really diggin the Microhybrid. You can now get your Microhybrid plans from Art.

The Microhybrid Yahoo Group is starting to take off!

Paul in Australia really likes the motor and has the pics to prove it.

Introduction

This is the latest version of my small hybrid motor known as The Micro Hybrid. This is a motor I started developing using Radio Shack Parts, and I have now finalized into a fully machined 24mm flyable motor. This motor is still based on those little pre-filled Micronox cylinders (hence the name), and uses paper as the fuel. It's not meant to be the most powerful or efficient for it's size, just very easy to build and fun to use.

Average power level is in the D range.
Estimated cost per flight is under $1.

The idea for a disposable nitrous cylinder hybrid motor is not new. Dave Oback and Bill Colburn did some research back around 1993 on this type of motor. Had I known of their research, I could have gotten to this point a lot sooner.

THE DISCLAIMER:

By reading this you agree to proceed at your own risk with any construction using any information provided on this web site and release me of any liability. This motor IS experimental and all the safety and performance characteristics have not been fully tested. If you don't agree with this, then don't do any building, just watch and enjoy. Thank You

The Plans

Overall motor view

The complete set of plans and instructions (14 pages) are now available. I have redesigned the motor to make it easier to machine, and, there's no threads to cut!

I have been getting a lot of frequently asked questions on my motor so I am now compiling a list for you to scan through.

I have also received some very nice comments from some of the folks who have placed orders.

Cost of the plans is $10 US

The plans include drawings with dimensions and instructions for making each part. Also included are instructions for assembling and firing the motor. And, of course, you also get email support to answer any questions you may have.

The Raw Materials Kit.

Over 150 Kits sold world wide.

I have scoured the city gathering these parts, so you won't have to! Included are all the RAW materials you need to make the motor. You get the motor tubing, the blank aluminum, the misc. parts and most important, the graphite for the nozzle. This was the hardest item for me to find and I was lucky to be able to get it at affordable prices.

The price for this kit is $20 US

Yeah, you might have most of this stuff in your shop, or you could probably go out and buy it, but when shopping around you might have to deal with minimum quantities, cutting charges, shipping charges, backorders, that little yellow note from UPS, etc... Your choice. :-)

There are 4 parts to the motor that need to be machined on a lathe.

Motor Tube Nitrous Cylinder Injector Body - also holds piercer and burst disk Paper Fuel Grain Graphite Nozzle

The motor tube aluminum needs to be trimmed to length and the snap ring grooves cut.
The injector body aluminum needs to be drilled through and the cavities bored.
The piercing unit brass needs to be drilled through and the piercing cone turned.
The nozzle graphite (machines like chalk) needs to be drilled through and the angles turned.

For a pictorial view of the work involved and a "sneak peak" of the plans, please visit Sean McAndrew's Micro Hybrid Page.
Here's another pictorial view of the work involved on Bruce Johnson's page.

So far the fastest machining time reported has been about 1 hour.

New - Complete motors

The Microhybrid is now available as a complete, ready to fly, motor.
Unfortunately, I do not provide these directly. You will need to order from one of the links below.

For the United Kingdom visit Roy Trzeciak-Hicks web page.  Make sure to take a look at his very interesting Technical Page.
For The Netherlands visit cavemanrocketry.com.

When ordering, please be sure to include your email address with your order so I can get in touch with you if I need to.
ORDER FORM.

Orders outside the USA, please check the above order form for special instructions.

Just in case you international folks need to do some currency conversions, you can try out these web sites here and here.

A lot of you are just like me and are asking "how long will it take to get my order"? Well, once I pull it from my PO box and get it all packed up and sent via Priority Mail, I would say you should have it in about 2-3 days in the US. Usually about 2 weeks outside the US.
As always, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me.

Thanks, and hope to hear from you soon - Rene
